#BlackHistoryMonth Edition SPOTLIGHT SALUTE - Dorothy Dandrige
HAPPY NEW YEAR TO EVERYONE! I for one am soooo very HAPPY that 2013 is OVER!
Life even though it keeps going, it also sometimes keeps us from doing other things that we would like to do! Each month I kept telling myself, I have to get back into my blogging, and no better time than the present!
Seeing that its been about 6 months since my last post and the LAST week of February, I will kick off 2014 with a Spotlight Salute in honor of Black History month. In past Salutes I have put the spolight on Dorothea Towles Chruch and Donyale Luna). Today I will like to Spotlight the Fantabulous #DOROTHYDANDRIGE (its almost like I have an fascination with names that start with the letter D!)
Born Dorothy Jean Dandridge in 1922. We all know her best for being the very 1st African American women in Hollywood to be nominated for a Best Actress Academy award for her role as Carmen Jones. Not only was she an actress, she was also an accomplished singer and dancer that appeared in several nightclubs. Her first major movie role was in the Movie Bright road in 1952.
After her award nominated role as Carmen Jones, Dorothy was offered other roles but declined to accept them for being to small after receiving her Oscar nomination and soon her film career would decline as well for not accepting them. Dorothy did take other roles like Porgy and Bess , but none would become the success of Carmen Jones. She passed away amid planning her comeback on the night club circuit from an apparent accidental over dose she was 42 years of age.
Black Actress' continue to honor her for her groundbreaking achievements in Hollywood, most notably Halle Berry who played her in a biopic about her life and who then went on to actually become the 1st black woman to win an academy award for best actress.
